St. Louis, MO – The board that runs St. Stanislaus Church sent the St. Louis Archdiocese a counter-offer Thursday morning in hopes of breaking an impasse.

The two sides have argued over who should control the largely Polish parish's assets.

Archbishop Raymond Burke says it's illegal for the board - and not the archdiocese - to control parish funds.

So, the board sent an offer Thursday morning that would give control of the funds to the church.

But, the board would act as a kind of landlord and lease the land and buildings to the archdiocese. The archdiocese could order certain repairs, for example, and it would be up to the board to actually make them. Board lawyer Roger Krasnicki says the lease deal is similar to how parishes like St. Anselm operate.

The counter-offer does not include a trust that Burke offered to put assets into.
