St. Louis – State highway officials gave the go-ahead Monday to another Missouri river bridge.

Road planners want to add a third span to the Daniel Boone Bridge complex, which connects Highway 40 between St. Louis and St. Charles Counties.

The Highways and Transportation Commission approved the bridge's location. It would be next to the two others and carry eastbound traffic only.

But MODOT's Linda Wilson says the project is still in its early stages.

"The big question though is, the funding for the construction," Wilson said. "And right now the Missouri River bridge on Hwy. 40 is sort of in competition with everything else in the region that everyone wants."

The project is is expected to cost $168 million.

In addition to finding the money, Wilson says engineers still need to draft a design.
