Washington – St. Louisan and former Missouri U.S. Senator John Danforth is leaving his post as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, after only five months on the job.
The former Republican senator and St. Louis native was among the candidates to succeed Colin Powell as secretary of state.
But Bush chose national security chief Condoleezza Rice instead.
Danforth told the President in his resignation letter that he wants to spend more time with his wife. Danforth sent the resignation letter just before Thanksgiving; President Bush accepted it five days later.
Danforth told Bush he'd still be available for short-term projects.
