Jefferson City, MO – A federal judge today lifted an order in a voting lawsuit, clearing the way for certification of Missouri's primary election results. The state Democratic Party and three Kansas City residents sued Republican Secretary of State Matt Blunt and the Kansas City Board of Election Commissioners. They claim state law conflicts with the federal Help America Vote Act.
The residents cast provisional ballots at the wrong polling places. They think their votes should count anyway. But Missouri law says votes cast in the wrong place don't count. Today's federal court ruling lifts a temporary restraining order and dismisses the Kansas City election board from the case. Election officials now can prepare absentee ballots and other ballots for the November election.
