St. Louis – Saint Louis University has canceled an appearance by Alan Keyes because he's now running for office.

A student group at SLU invited Keyes to speak next month as part of a lecture series.

But that was before he joined the race for U.S. Senate in Illinois.

Spokesman Jeff Fowler says the school had to cancel Keyes because of rules SLU faces as a non-profit organization. He adds the move was nothing personal against Keyes.

"It's just simply the fact that anybody who's a candidate for office - these rules apply to us as well as all other tax-exempt organizations, and they're just rules we have to follow," Fowler said.

Fowler says the students who invited Keyes might meet again once school starts to find another speaker.

Keyes is facing Democrat Barack Obama in the Senate race.
