South Carolina Fugitives Captured in Illinois

By AP/KWMU

Lexington, Ill. – Deputies in central Illinois have captured one of two inmates who escaped from a state prison in South Carolina over the weekend.

The capture came a day after police arrested a woman accused of helping the men escape in Fairview Heights, about 15 miles east of St. Louis.

South Carolina authorities say 26-year-old Robert Diehl was caught Wednesday morning and 25-year-old Jonathan Melton is still being sought.

McLean County Sheriff Dave Owens says a deputy discovered the escapees after checking a license plate on Interstate 55 in Bloomington this morning.

Police chased the car to the P.J. Keller Highway near Lexington, Ill. where the inmates ran.

Police dogs tracked the first inmate, and the search is still on for the second man.

Both were in prison for burglary and other crimes.
