Springfield, Ill – Illinois Senate Republicans cut a cake and unveiled a tongue-in-cheek plaque Tuesday commemorating the latest a spring legislative session has ever gone.
Senators Brad Burzynski of Clare and Dale Righter of Mattoon led eleven GOP senators in deriding Governor Rod Blagojevich and Senate President Emil Jones -- both Democrats -- for failing to get a budget passed.
But Blagojevich and Jones have struggled with legislative Republicans and Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan in closing a deficit in a $54 billionspending plan.
The disagreement has led to a 60-day overtime session that threatens to disrupt Democrats' plans to attend next week's Democratic National Convention in Boston.
The longest a session previously had gone into overtime was July 19th in 1991.
