Springfield, Ill – Governor Rod Blagojevich signed a bill Thursday making Illinois the first state with a law specifically allowing HIV patients to donate organs to others with HIV.
But federal regulations still must be changed to allow the procedures.
Kim McCullough of the Evanston-based Gift of Hope Organ and Tissue Donor Network says the new law will result in more available donated organs.
But opponents worry there aren't enough controls to prevent infected organs from accidentally being given to someone who doesn't have HIV.
