Springfield, Ill. – The state of Illinois is starting the fiscal year today (Thursday) without a budget.
State government will keep running, though. Leaders are instead pushing a one-month budget that will keep services going, and make sure state workers still get paid. Gov. Rod Blagojevich and Sen. President Emil Jones said there wouldn't be an agreement on a full-year spending plan by the start of the new budget year.
The leaders say they're close to a full-year budget agreement and they say it won't remove the pressure to get that done soon. The governor still says he'll keep legislators working at the Capitol until the full budget is done.
