St. Louis – Missouri Republican Senator Jim Talent and Republican Congressman Todd Akin are sponsoring legislation to limit the power of federal courts to rule on the Pledge of Allegiance.
Ruling on a technicality, the U.S. Supreme Court last month reversed an appellate court decision that said the phrase "under God" in the pledge is unconstitutional.
However, it's likely the appellate court will re-examine the issue.
Akin's bill would limit the jurisdiction of lower federal courts to rule on the phrase's constitutionality.
He says acknowledgement of God is steeped in the Declaration of Independence.
"It's a three-part equation," Aiken said. "There's a God. God grants all of us basic, fundamental rights, and the job of civil government is to protect those rights. And you take God out of the equation, there's no more fundamental rights."
A House committee will hear the bill in the next couple of weeks.
