St. Louis – Missouri Senator Kit Bond is co-sponsoring a bi-partisan bill that would double the amount of money the U.S. government spends on battling Alzheimer's Disease.

The Republican joined with Democratic Senator Barbara Mikulski of Maryland Wednesday to introduce the Ronald Reagan Alzheimer's Breakthrough Act.

It would spend $1.4 billion on research, care and prevention, up from $700 million.

But Bond says it makes no mention of controversial embryonic stem cell research.

"The most promising avenues for research are not related to stem cells," Bond said. "They are pursuing many promising avenues already, none of which involves stem cells."

Harvesting embryonic stem cells destroys the embryos. Many conservatives say that's the equivalent of abortion.
