Jefferson City, Mo. – St. Louis officials are moving forward with plans for early voting before the November elections. But state lawmakers say they don't think they ever approved the practice.
St. Louis officials point to a state law that changed some election procedures in 2002. Democrat Jim Seigfreid chaired the House Elections Committee when the bill passed. He said Friday that the final version of the bill does not allow early voting.
Seigfreid says an early version of the bill might have allowed early voting, but that part was removed before the bill finally passed.
Republican Secretary of State Matt Blunt says he wishes lawmakers had approved early voting. But he says they never did.
