Jefferson City, Mo. – A bill passed in the state Senate today would allow police officers to stop people solely for not wearing a seat belt.
An officer now has to stop the motorist for another reason, and only then may cite the person for disobeying with the seat belt law.
Supporters say the change will increase safety and make the state eligible for federal incentive money.
The seat belt provision is in a more than 200-page transportation bill sent to the House. The House passed its own version, minus the seat belt change.
Both chambers must agree to the same language to send either bill to the governor.
