Jefferson City, MO – A proposed deal is on the table for a new
state prison for female offenders.
Officials from the western Missouri town of Chillicothe outlined a plan yesterday to replace an aging state prison already in their town by donating land for a new state prison.
Under the deal, the city also would take over responsibility for the existing Chillicothe Correctional Center.
Governor Bob Holden's proposed budget plan for the state included closing the Chillicothe prison as a way to save money.
Lawmakers have decided to continue funding the prison in next year's budget, but they're also looking for a long-term solution.
