Washington, DC – The environmental group American Rivers is once again listing the Mighty Mississippi as one of the nation's most endangered waterways. The group's rankings were released Wednesday and put the Mississippi tenth.
American Rivers says work by the Army Corps of Engineers and the corps' plans to extend locks on the river have left it "on the verge of ecological collapse."
The corps, though, says its work has improved habitats while keeping barges afloat and protecting against floods.
