Chicago, Ill. – The Reverend Jesse Jackson said Sunday that Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich should not sign legislation that let 18 year olds get a gun permit without a parent's consent.

The current minimum age to get a firearm owner's ID card without parental consent is 21.

The governor has said he will approve the lower age limit if lawmakers also send him a ban on assault weapons in Illinois. A federal ban on those weapons will expire later this year.

Rev. Jackson said Sunday in Chicago that letting 18-year olds buy guns does not make the state safer.

A governor's spokeswoman says Blagojevich has to work with a geographically and culturally diverse legislature.
