St. Louis – Missouri Governor Bob Holden Thursday brought his series of hearings on the state Medicaid program to St. Louis.

Holden is touring the state while the Republican-controlled legislature is on break.

He says proposed social service cuts will hurt thousands of low-income children and families.

"The vast majority of those affected are single working women," Holden said. "Under their cuts, if you were the mother of two with a single yearly income of more than $7,835, you would make too much money to qualify for our health care program."

The proposed cuts would make it more difficult for some people to qualify for Medicaid.

They would also impose new co-payments on participants each time they visit a doctor.

Republicans say the Medicaid program is growing too quickly.
