Hartford, Ill. – The federal government and three oil companies have agreed on a plan to get rid of a huge lake of gasoline under the village of Hartford, Ill.
People in the town have reported fumes from the 4,000,000 gallon pool for more than 30 years.
Premcorm, Shell, and Atlantic Richfield agreed to provide temporary measures to protect people from dangerous fumes.
They also agreed to come up with a plan for permanently getting rid of the underground contamination, and relocating people if necessary.
There will be two public meetings about the matter next Thursday, March 25.
People can get one-on-one questions answered by EPA and Illinois officials from 1:00-3:00 p.m. that day. A public meeting will begin that evening at 7:00 p.m.
