Edwardsville, Ill – An Edwardsville alderman facing drug charges has resigned from the city council.

But Herb Clay says he hopes to keep his job as Madison County's deputy chief probation officer.

Clay was placed on unpaid administrative leave from that job after he was arrested in December in East St. Louis.

Police say he ran a stop sign, then fled as they chased his car. Police say they later found cocaine in the vehicle.

Clay was charged with drug possession and resisting police and is free on $500 bond.

Clay's lawyer says he can't do his job as an alderman and get treatment for what he called a "medical problem." But the lawyer says with two kids, and one in medical school, Clay's employment is important to him.
