Jefferson City, MO – A state audit says the prescription drug plan for Missouri senior citizens could be improved to reach more residents, and offer them better drug prices. State Auditor Claire McCaskill released the report Thursday.
The audit finds that Medicaid reimbursement rates from some prescription drugs were lower than the rates offered by the state plan, called Senior Rx. It says changing the rates could cut costs.
The audit also says private drug plans from pharmaceutical companies have often been a better choice for seniors.
McCaskill says the program has used less than one-fourth of the amount the Legislature budgeted so far. She says seniors either are unaware of the program or don't find it beneficial.
