Jefferson City, MO – The Missouri Corrections Department says retirements and budget cuts had a role in lowered security at a state prison where two inmates allegedly killed a third convict.
After the attack the men hid from authorities for four days.
The October incident prompted an internal review of security at the State Penitentiary in Jefferson City.
The old prison now has reduced its inmate population, shuffled staff to keep a closer eye on prisoners and added 16 video surveillance cameras.
The information is in a report obtained under an open-records request by The Associated Press.
