St. Louis, MO – Hundreds of fans attended groundbreaking ceremonies for the St. Louis Cardinals' new stadium on Saturday.
The ballpark will be located between Highway 40 and Busch Stadium, which will come down. The new facility is due to open for Opening Day, 2006.
Fans stuck out the ceremony in rainy weather during many speeches and introductions of Cardinals past and present. Hall of Famer Stan Musial played the harmonica and led the crowd in a rendition of "Take Me Out To The Ball Game."
Team president Mark Lamping said it was better to have rain on groundbreaking day than on opening day.
Work outside the $387 million stadium has been going on for about a month.
The team also released the result of an online poll in which fans picked red seats for the new park over green seats.
