Springfield, Ill. – Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White wants to keep people from buying cars if they have lost their license for drunken driving or reckless homicide.
White Wednesday proposed a law making it a misdemeanor for drivers to buy an automobile while their license is suspended. It would not apply to people who have special permission to keep driving.
Auto dealers and banks providing car loans would be required to check whether buyers are eligible before completing sales. Dealers who violate the law could be suspended from doing business in Illinois.
Cars purchased in violation of the law would be confiscated and given to local police.
The proposal is backed by Mothers Against Drunk Driving and the Alliance Against Intoxicated Motorists.
