St. Louis – Union Pacific Railroad officials announced Tuesday they are transferring more than a thousand jobs from St. Louis to a new headquarters in Omaha, Nebraska.

Union Pacific spokeswoman Kathryn Blackwell says fewer than 100 jobs will remain in St. Louis.

"The majority of the employees are with our customer service center," Blackwell said. "We have a large number of technology employees that will be moving, and another large group in the accounting function."

The railroad will retain mainly legal and managerial staff in St. Louis.

Blackwell says the job transfers are the result of a consolidation of St. Louis and Omaha headquarters.

Workers will transfer between May and September. A new Omaha headquarters building is scheduled to open in May.
