St. Louis – An independent committee formed to draw support for a proposed $500 million bond issue for the St. Louis Metropolitan Sewer District has officially kicked off its campaign.
MSD officials say the bonds will pay for repairs and upgrades to the region's aging sewer system while creating some 7,000 jobs.
But longtime MSD critic Tom Sullivan says before citizens can approve this kind of measure, MSD must become more accountable.
"I think that there's probably never been more outlandish spending going now at MSD than there is now," Sullivan said. "When you look at these situations, and consider whether or not this district deserves approval of a $500 million bond issue, my response is no, not at the present time."
The measure will go before St. Louis city and county voters February 3.
