Jefferson City, Mo. – Public schools and colleges in Missouri will get a slight boost in state funding. On Tuesday, Governor Bob Holden said he'll restore $83 million of the more than $200 million he withheld earlier this year.
That move is possible because of an accounting trick that will have the federal government send this fiscal year money it was to send next fiscal year.
That money is actually for Medicaid reimbursements to states, but it also allows Holden to move some money between accounts, thus the restoration of education funds.
The released amount is a little over one-third the amount that Holden withheld from education this summer. He made those cuts because he says lawmakers passed a budget that spends more than the state has.
