Jefferson City, MO – Public schools across Missouri that were labeled as "failing" have appealed to the state.
The state plans to announce in about two weeks which, if any schools, are being dropped from the failing list.
Under the initial finding, half of Missouri's public schools were found to be failing to meet academic standards established under the new federal No Child Left Behind law.
Districts had until November 7 to appeal on their schools' behalf.
Under the law, schools must show progress each toward the goal of having all students be proficient in math and reading by 2014. Failing schools that receive federal money for serving poor or disadvantaged students eventually are required to do such things as pay for tutoring or, in some cases, reorganize.
