washington, dc – The Bush administration says it's bringing in a new team of government scientists to work on a plan for the Missouri River. On Wednesdya, scientists who had worked on the Missouri for years were taken off the project.
The Corps of Engineers must come up with a new plan by next month for operating the river in line with the Endangered Species Act.
The new scientists will say whether the corps can avoid major changes but still comply with the law. And switching to a new group could block changes to the river's flow.
Conservation groups are angered by the decision. They say the administration is trying to avoid changing to a more seasonal ebb and flow that would benefit birds and fish.
But the Fish and Wildlife Service says critics are jumping to conclusions.
