Brooklyn, Ill. – The IRS is giving a St. Louis area town a break on its taxes.
Brooklyn, Illinois, owed the IRS around $230,000 in back taxes and penalties. Someone failed to pay employee withholding taxes for three years in the 1990s.
Now, the IRS says the impoverished town can erase the debt by paying only $1,000 as long as it keeps up with its tax bills from now on.
An auditor recommended the decision based on the town's weak financial picture.
