Lessons for St. Louis from San Diego, Part 1

By Kevin Lavery, KWMU

St. Louis, MO –

Say the words "St. Louis," and most people immediately picture the Gateway Arch.

Say "San Diego," and sprawling beaches come to mind. Though each image is a valuable marketing tool, St. Louis and San Diego are each seeking to promote what lies beyond their welcome mats - their downtown cores.

This week, a group of St. Louis civic and business leaders traveled to San Diego to witness that city's downtown revitalization. KWMU's Kevin Lavery prepared this first of three reports.
