St. Louis, Mo. – At the American Legion's national convention, Mr. Bush said the US will not back down, despite the deaths of American soldiers and the recent bombing of the UN's Baghdad headquarters.
The President compared the current situation in Iraq to the years following World War II, and said rebuilding that country will take years, not months.
"Retreat in the face of terror would only invite further and bolder attacks. There will be no retreat," Mr. Bush said.
Mr. Bush also touted his efforts to shrink the backlog of veterans' disability claims, but stopped short of discussing mandatory VA health care funding-something the American Legion strongly supports.
