American Airlines Cuts Affect Small IL Airports

Springfield, ILL –

Several smaller Illinois airports will lose at least some American Airlines service to St. Louis this fall, as the carrier has announced it will make schedule cutbacks to save money.

On Tuesday, local officials asked the airline to reconsider. Illinois Public Radio's Sean Crawford prepared this report.

NOTE: Here is a breakdown of flight reductions and additions:

Bloomington
Drops from 9 to 3 flights for St. Louis and goes from 0 to 4 to Chicago-O'Hare

Champaign
Drops from 6 to 2 flights to St. Louis and adds one additional O'Hare flight, for a total of 7 per day

Peoria
Drops from 9 to 3 flights to St. Louis and increases from 4 to 6 flights per day to O'Hare

Quad Cities
Loses all 8 flights to St. Louis but gains 4 to O'Hare

Springfield
Flights to St. Louis will be cut from 10 to 3 with no American service to O'Hare

Decatur, Quincyand Marion
will all keep their St. Louis flights; Rockford offers no American service.
