St. Louis, Mo. – Today was the first day of school for many students in the region today. But it was also the first day in a new school for many Wellston students.
Parents had the option of transferring their children out of the Wellston schools this year. That's because the state took away the district's accreditation because of poor academic performance.
The Ritenour School District is taking in more transfers than any other district. But superintendent Paul Doerrer says the extra 70 students will be easily accepted.
"We're always ready to welcome new students. While 70 sounds like a lot, we have 9 schools. So any one school there will be only a few more students because of the Wellston transfer," Doerrer said.
Wellston will pay other schools the tuition of every student that chose to transfer this year. For those who are staying at Wellston this yearclasses start next Monday.
