City Schools Will Close, Managment Firm Says


St. Louis, MO – The private company hired to manage the St. Louis schools says the district has too many buildings for the number of students enrolled.

The interim administration says it will close some buildings but hasn't yet determined which ones or how many. More than half of the district's 112 school buildings were built before 1950; 31 of them are at less than 70% capacity. They say the city has far more schools than most other systems in the country with similar enrollment.

The announcement Monday, the last day on the job for retiring superintendent Cleveland Hammonds, Jr.
