Bond in St. Louis Area Discusses Highway Funding

By AP/KWMU

Kirkwood, Mo. – Senator Kit Bond was in the St. Louis suburb of Kirkwood today to tout the Bush administration's multiyear spending plan for highways and public transit.

But Bond says Missouri might have to consider road tolls as a way of generating revenue to overhaul its aging interstate highway system.

He says the need for road repair and construction outstrips federal resources.

The Republican spoke at Meramec Community College. He was joined by the Federal Highway Administration's Mary Peters, Missouri Department of Transportation director Henry Hungerbeeler and Kirkwood Chamber of Commerce president Jim Wright.

Bond chairs the Senate subcommittee that will write the multiyear spending bill the Senate will consider. He said the Bush administration plan will serve as a framework.
