Springfield, IL – The Illinois Legislature is moving closer to approving a new budget, and they are following the outlines set down by Governor Rod Blagojevich.
Lawmakers last week approved the spending side of the budget. It was basically the governor's proposal, with a little extra money added for education, prisons and social services.
Now officials have to figure out how to pay for all that.
The governor meets today with legislative leaders to discuss that question.
Blagojevich has proposed raising business fees, closing tax loopholes and tapping special-purpose government funds to fill a
$5 billion budget deficit.
But some of his tax proposals are unpopular with lawmakers and business. So officials are talking about taking even more money from special state funds.
Lawmakers hope to end their spring session this week.
