St. Louis, Mo. – Mark Ritchie says the low price of commodities like corn and soybeans is the biggest problem facing American farmers.
He heads the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy, a nonprofit think tank that focuses on connections between local and global agriculture policy.
"Always oversupply will lead to much lower prices unless there's some form of intervention, to help bring supply and demand back into balance," Ritchie said.
The group was one of few at the forum that supports labeling of genetically-modified foods, proposals agribusiness companies vigorously oppose.
Ritchie says there's an imbalance in interests between grain producers and the companies to whom they sell their products.
The World Agricultural Forum concludes its biennial meeting Tuesday.
