Jefferson City, MO – The Missouri Senate today narrowly
defeated a proposed sales tax increase.
It would have asked voters to raise the state sales tax temporarily, as a way to soften budget-balancing cuts in government
services.
Instead, the Senate passed a measure to bring in money through more unconventional ways. One would eliminate some business tax
breaks that Governor Holden calls loop-holes.
Negotiations between the House and Senate on a final version of the roughly $19 billion budget are on-hold, while
lawmakers consider ways to raise money.
