Jefferson City, MO – The Missouri Senate is considering proposed cuts to higher education today, as debate continues on a state budget.
The proposal in the Republican-led Senate would cut more than $89 million dollars from what Democratic Governor Holden had
proposed for higher education.
That would result in a more than ten percent cut for each state university, college and community college.
Higher education institutions already have raised tuition to cope with budget cuts in the past two years.
Senator Ken Jacob says the latest proposed cuts could force tuition to rise by another 25 percent. The Columbia Democrat says that would amount to a tax-increase for many middle-class families.
Republicans contend the cuts are necessary to balance the budget without big tax increases.
