Jefferson City, MO – Missouri Governor Bob Holden is threatening to veto a budget proposal endorsed by the Senate Appropriations Committee.
The committee endorsed a budget last week that includes almost $600 million in cuts. It also included a contingency plan to reverse about $200 million of those cuts if new revenues become available.
But Holden says the budget plan makes too many cuts, and does not generate enough new revenues.
Holden originally had proposed about $700 million in new revenues -- including higher taxes on cigarattes and casinos
and the elimination of some corporate tax breaks.
The Senate is expected to debate its budget plan later this week. Lawmakers are required to pass a budget by May ninth.
