Corps of Engineers Will Dredge Missouri River

By AP/KWMU

St. Louis, Mo. – The Corps of Engineers has hired a company to dredge a particularly low part of the Missouri River, near the Osage River.

That's in response to complaints from government officials that Missouri farmers weren't getting enough fertilizer because the low Missouri levels were keeping barges from shipping normal cargo sizes.

The Corps will pay $200,000 for the Jefferson City company to dredge almost 70,000 tons of sediment from river's bottom.

Barges operate on the lower third of the Missouri, from Sioux City, Iowa, to St. Louis.
