Washington, DC – For the first time in nine years, the Missouri River is absent from a widely publicized list of the nation's most endangered rivers.
American Rivers says conditions on the Missouri aren't any better, but the group removed the river because it's confident it will win a lawsuit with the federal government.
That lawsuit aims to return the Missouri to a seasonal ebb and flow, which environmentalists say will improve habitat for birds and fish.
Another factor is a lengthy series of delays in a new Corps of Engineers management plan for the river. The plan will dictate any flow changes.
