Jefferson City, Mo. – The Missouri House gave initial approval Wednesday to a proposal that would require women to wait 24 hours before having an abortion. The waiting period would be waived in the cases of medical emergencies.
The plan also requires women to sign a statement saying they had not been coerced into having an abortion. That caused several female Democrats in the House to call the plan an insult, saying it suggested women are less capable of amking decisions.
A similar measure requiring a day's wait in Illinois was defeated Wednesday in a Democrat-controlled House committee.
