East St. Louis Voters Boot Powell

By AP/KWMU

East St. Louis, Ill. – Debra Powell will not be East St. Louis's mayor much longer. Former city councilman Eddie Jackson and former mayor Carl Officer got the most votes in yesterday's election, meaning they will face off for mayor in the April election.

Powell was a distant third, running as a write-in candidate because the city's election board removed her from the ballot for filing election papers incorrectly.

Here are unofficial vote totals from the East St. Louis Board of Election Commissioners. The top two vote-getters (in bold) move on to run in the April election.

East St. Louis Mayor's Race: Feb. 25, 2003
Candidate Votes %
Eddie Jackson 3,090 45.1%
Carl Officer 2,132 31.1%
Will McGaughy 626 9.1%
Hermon Betts 55 0.8%
(i) Debra Powell (write-in) 639 9.3%
