St. Louis, MO – Residents of the McRee Town neighborhood in South St. Louis protested yesterday afternoon - in an effort to save their homes from demolition. McRee Town is located just north of the Missouri Botanical Garden. The Garden District Redevelopment Corporation wants to redevelop and stabilize the neighborhood and the St. Louis Board of Aldermen approved a plan calling for demolishing 6 city blocks.
Father Gerald Kleba with Citizens for a Fair McRee Town Plan says revitalization is fine - but displacing families and demolishing affordable housing is not.
Demolition of McRee Town homes is scheduled to begin in April.
