City Leaders Announce Downtown Improvements

By H. Wicai, KWMU

St. Louis, MO – St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay says things are looking up for downtown.

The Cardinals last week agreed to a plan calling for a privately built stadium. And Wednesday Slay announced the Old Post Office Square District will get a much-needed facelift.

A state finance board Tuesday approved nearly $14 million in tax credits for the Old Post Office project. Slay says plans to restore the Old Post Office include a Webster University satellite campus and new Missouri Court of Appeals offices.

He says right now the area has about 2 million square feet of empty office space in seven vacant buildings.

To celebrate the finance board announcement Slay ceremoniously knocked down boards that have blocked traffic in front of the Old Post Office for ten years.
