Springfield, IL – A coalition of women's groups is trying to
revive the Equal Rights Amendment and get it passed in Illinois.
Groups such as the American Association of University Women and the National Organization for Women held a meeting on the issue today in Springfield.
They hope the amendment will get a warmer welcome in Illinois now that Democrats control both legislative chambers.
The last big battle over ERA in Illinois was in 1982.
After that, the national deadline for approval had passed. Only 35 of the 38 needed states had ratified it before the deadline.
ERA supporters now argue the deadline is not binding.
They want Illinois and two other states to ratify the amendment. Then they will argue to Congress that the amendment should take
effect.
