SLU Smallpox Vaccine Study to Go Nationwide

By K. Lavery, KWMU

St. Louis, MO – St. Louis University is looking for volunteers to take part in a nationwide clinical trial to test the potency of the current smallpox vaccination. The study focuses on people aged 32 to 70 who've already been vaccinated against smallpox at least once. Researchers will measure how well volunteers respond to three randomly selected dilutions of the vaccine.

The US stopped routine smallpox vaccinations in the early 1970's. However, it's believed nations such as Iraq and North Korea are stockpiling the virus for use as a weapon.
