Flu shot demand down this year

By Mandi Rice, St. Louis Public Radio

ST. LOUIS – Healthcare providers in St. Louis say they're seeing less demand for flu shots so far this year.

Last week BJC Hospital gave out almost 29,000 flu shots, down slightly from 2009.

Another organization, the Visiting Nurse Association, said that it's given far fewer vaccinations than expected. Pam Breitweiser of the VNA said that people may be less sensitive to the issue after the focus on H1N1 last year.

"I would think that people would want to be protected more because of what happened last year and the pandemic that H1N1 was," Breitweiser said. "We really need to get out and educate people that, you know, it is a good thing for them to get a flu shot."

St. Louis Public Schools had been planning to offer free vaccination clinics last week, but cancelled them because of low interest.
