St. Louis – A new poll shows Missouri Secretary of State Robin Carnahan trailing Republican Congressman Roy Blunt by six points in the race to fill Kit Bond's Senate seat.
The Rasmussen poll released Thursday shows Blunt leading Carnahan 49 to 43 percent, a reversal from last month when Carnahan lead Blunt by two points.
Blunt said his opposition to Democratic proposals for healthcare legislation is one factor driving his surge in the polls.
"I think that the Pelosi, Reed, Obama plan for healthcare is clear and its out there," Blunt said. "Robin Carnahan said she'd vote for the Senate bill and the Senate bill was terrible just like the House one; they head the country in the wrong direction."
Compared with Blunt, Carnahan has been relatively quiet about health care.
A spokesman for her campaign said she supports getting tough on big insurance companies by increasing competition and making it harder for them to deny coverage.
The new poll comes on the heels of GOP wins in Virginia, New Jersey and Massachusetts. But Carnahan campaign spokesman Linden Zakula said those other races do not change the way Missourians feel about Robin Carnahan.
"Not much has changed for us," Zakula said. "From day one this race has been about understanding that people are frustrated with Washington and things not getting done. And we have always believed that the way to get things done is that voters need to have a choice of someone new with a record of getting something done for Missouri families."
